This Past Week:

This past week we have been inspired by our significant word, SNOW! Each day, students review the letters within our significant word. We also add meaning to our word by exploring everything magical about snow; from drawing snowflakes, to using loose parts, to creating a winter wonderland!

Learning through play continues to be an essential part of our daily learning. During centre exploration time, students have the opportunity to think about their lesson learning and explore new ideas in with new materials and in new ways.  Students have the opportunity to learn number shapes, explore how to put together new materials to build structures, sort materials and create artistic works of art. During centre time, conversations are often focused on the lesson learning, as students connect the curriculum to the greater world around them.

"Mr. Hamby helped us make this! He was the leader of the top of the castle."

"Practicing our cutting and pasting through collage"

"We continue working on our sorting skills. We sorted by colours and by different objects."

"Painting has begun!"

"Centre time is time to extend our learning."

This Past Week:

Thank you for making our student conferences a great success. We so enjoyed seeing all of our Kindergarten families and speaking to the great learning and accomplishments of your children!

This week students have explored number concepts through a variety of hands on games. Through game play, students learn to think flexibly about mathematics while also building strong foundational skills. Students will continue to play these games in the next few weeks to improve their number recognition, subitizing (recognizing the dots on a dice at a glance) and counting fluency. Please feel free to practice these games at home!

Students were very excited to learn about our new significant word... SNOW!  Learning letters through significant words allows students to see letters in a meaningful context. We are so impressed that after exploring the word Family, our students are able to independently recognize the word and letters within it! Excellent work, Kindergarten students!

Our Letter Exploration Centre

As a part of our inquiry about the word SNOW, students engaged in a class read aloud of the story "A Very Special Snowflake" by Don Hoffman. After reading the story, students shared their comprehension and understanding by creating a journal page about their favourite part of the story. Students were asked to orally share their favourite part, and draw a picture to represent their ideas.

Singing continues to be an important part of language development and creative expression in our Kindergarten classes. Students have enjoyed listening to and singing the words in the song, "Snowflake, Snowflake"

This Past Week:

This past week we continued our work with number and representing number sets. Working with dice, students played a variety of math games that challenged their ability to count, represent and draw sets of numbers. We also began to explore which numeral we would use to label each of our pictorial representations. We began by playing each of the games independently, then worked with our peers to engage in collaborative play.

Practicing rolling and representing number sets using mini white boards.

                           .

Playing "Fill the Chutes" with a partner. In this game, we were challenged with rolling
the die to fill "chutes", or columns, of 12 squares. The game became
more challenging as we filled each of the chutes!

 .                 .

Rolling a die to represent all six number sets in our Visual Journals.

This Past Week:

In Physical Education this week, students have been learning about the sport of curling. They have learned how the terms stone or rock, house, button and hurry are used within the sport. Students have also been working together in small teams to perfect their rock throwing skills.

"Blocks, art materials, and story play are a few of the many ways that children explore and represent what they know about the world. Through active engagement with multimodal literacies and with the support of teachers to scaffold their learning, children are able to solve problems, create and test theories, and express ideas, thoughts and feelings."
-2019 Flight Framework Document

We may play together, we may play alone but the key is that we play!

Remembrance Day; Thank you to our families for attending our Remembrance Day Ceremony and donating items to the Food Bank.

We will remember. Making a community poppy!

Letter Learning

To explore alphabet learning, students have examined letters within a significant word. For the past few weeks, we have taken the time to explore the letters within the word "Family."

Using poetry, letter sorts, printing practice, building letters with manipulatives, singing songs and engaging in letter scavenger hunts, students have developed a strong understanding of the each letter. To culminate our learning, students created a thoughtful journal page about their family.

Math

In math, we continued to look at sorting and counting. To tie in our inquiry about why leaves change colour, students sorted three types of leaves; Aspen, Crab Apple and Caragana. Students then counted how many they had of each type of leaf and wrote the numeral beside.
