This Past Week:

In Mathematics this week, we have been exploring the patterns we see in our world. As part of our inquiry into patterns, students will be exploring various art forms.

Talking with our math partners to build our math vocabulary and reasoning. "Is this a pattern? Why? Why not?"

As part of our investigation of pattern, we read the beautiful picture book Grandma's Necklaces, by Catherine Twomey Fosnot. The story is filled with various complex and simple patterns and served as a wonderful invitation for students to begin developing their own necklace pattern.
We began this process by exploring a variety of manipulatives to inspire ideas and then sketched out our initial pattern ideas on whiteboards.

            .

Planning our own necklaces using patterns.

In our literacy work over the past couple of weeks, students have been exploring all of the letters in the word "pattern". This week, students created a page in their visual journal to demonstrate their printing skills, printing PATTERN in both upper and lower case letters.

In Physical Education, students continue to develop their hand eye coordination by playing Badminton and Scoop Ball. Working in pairs, students have improved their skills by passing a balloon back and forth, in place of a birdie. Students have had so much fun watching their racket skills improve while having a great time with a partner!

This Past Week:

This week we spent time celebrating our accomplishments in relation to our story telling inquiry & celebration of learned.

We learned what it means to reflect on our learning by looking back at our work and thinking about what we did well, and what we learned.

We also spent time sharing our stories with our peers. Students enjoyed telling their exciting stories to one another.

We also spent time speaking about Kindness and what it means to be kind to each other. To celebrate the kindness in our classroom, we worked hard to create "Kindness Crowns." It was magical to see everyone help each other create these magnificent crowns!

We also took the time to hand out Valentine's Day cards to our classmates. Thank you for your help in making this a smooth process!

Valentine's Day Information

Your child is welcome to bring in valentines to hand out to their classmates if this is something they are interested in doing. If your child chooses to bring in valentines, I have a couple small requests:
  • Organizing the handing-out of these things can be a bit difficult. To simplify the process, I am asking that students sign their valentines with their own name, but leave the "To" part blank. Or write, To: My friend. We have 20 children in each class.
  • We have spent a great deal of time learning to write our names with lower case letters, using a capital only at the beginning. As your child will be writing their name many, many times, please encourage them to write their name this way.
  • Due to student allergies, I request that students not bring in food treats for each other. If you are interested in sending in something extra, pencils, stickers or any other non-food treat is welcome (but not necessary!)
