Learning in Kindergarten

Dear Kindergarten Families,

Thank you for supporting your child with their learning during this difficult time. We understand that many families are currently busy making arrangements for their children and navigating how to proceed in the days going forward.

We wanted to support learning at home this week by giving you ideas of what to do with your child at home to progress their learning. We understand that supporting your child at home will be difficult for some families, and ask that you do your best with the resources you have. Please know that at this time, these ideas are optional as we wait for direction as to what online learning may look like going forward.

We are all in this together. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns, and we will work to support you in any way that we can.

Kind regards,

Ms. Sticksl, Ms. Dixon and Ms. Sirup

Early Literacy
  • This week our Significant Word is Care
  • Learning the letter formation and the corresponding sounds will be our focus.
Steps to Learning:
  1. Listen to the ABC Song (see YouTube link below)
  2. Focus on the new letter C. Can you find words that start with the letter C around the house?(Look at the C words below)
  3. On a piece of paper, practice forming the letter C both upper and lowercase. (See Letter Formation below); draw 4 pictures that start with the letter C; write the word using lowercase letters; colour the pictures; share your words with a family member. (See example below)
  4. Choose a book and look for the letter C. Have someone read you this book.

This Past Week

"How can you make a cube? a sphere? a cylinder?"
This week we continued to explore the concept of 3D shapes and patterning by creating the beads for our necklaces. This task had students work on their fine motor skills, analyzing 3D shapes and following a plan as they carefully crafted their beads. This was a challenging task and required us to work on perseverance and keeping going, even when something is hard!
Our beads being left to dry.

Beads, beads.... so many beads!

Painting our handmade beads with acrylic paint to complete our designs!

Exploring patterns further in our school community, students observed and created a drawing of the living wall that now occupies the school gathering space. As we observed the wall and the alternating shades of green that make up its bands of colour, so many questions emerged about how the wall works.

  • How do the plants grow?
  • How do the plants on the wall stay alive?
  • How did they get the dirt in there?
  • Do the plants have roots?
  • Why is there water in the bottom?
  • Why are there bubbles? Is there soap in there?

Students have been talking about the idea of what it means to be unique. We understand that what makes us different makes us special, and how important it is to do what makes us feel happy.

To explore this idea, we read the story Howard B. Wigglebottom Follows his Heart by Howard Binkow. In this story, Howard LOVES to dance, but he feels a little differently when his classmates don't respond in kind. He tries other activities like singing, and drawing... but nothing fills his heart like dancing. After encouragement from his Grandfather, Howard B. decides to learn some new moves for his school dance. After dancing for his friends and hearing their kind words, Howard B. learns that doing what you love is important to fill your heart!

Students were then asked what fills their heart, and what makes them happiest.

Lego, Teacher, School, Camping
Zoo, Kindness, Drawing

Hot tubs, bananas, play, flowers, school bus

Frozen lego, apples, art, being kind

My Mom, drawing, loving teacher

And most importantly, we continue each day to learn and grow through play!

Explore the alphabet... can you find the missing mystery letter?

Recognizing letters

Practicing sounding out words

Retelling stories

In our work with numbers this week, students enjoyed playing a new game called "Dice Race". The object of the game is to determine which numeral "wins the race" with the repeated rolls of a die. We kept track of each roll with snap cubes to determine which numeral was winning. With each round of the game, we paid attention to which numbers we rolled most frequently. Dice Race is developing our number recognition and counting skills and has led into a great conversation around probability.
