This Past Week

In mathematics this week we continued our investigation of pattern by looking for patterns in the world around us. Students were challenged to identify patterns in the classroom and school community. We had so much fun photographing, categorizing and identifying the pattern core in the arrangements we discovered.

Further Investigation: Can you find a pattern in your home? If you do, please take a picture and send it to your classroom teacher!

We continue to work with the concept of pattern to bring our necklace designs to life. In order to prepare for sculpting our necklace beads, students practiced making a variety of 3D shapes out of air-dry clay. We learned how to form the various shapes required in order to construct our designs. As we explored the clay and improved our technique, we practiced talking about and referring to each of the shapes using their proper names. Some of the shapes we formed include, spheres, cubes, cylinders, rectangular prisms and diamonds.

We are so excited to begin making the real beads!!

Through this task, students are also learning about the different qualities of various 3D objects. Using our class beads as inspiration, students learned about cube, cones, sphere and cylinders. Some students thought outside the box and included various other shapes as well.  To help us learn the names of these shapes, students have enjoyed the Singing Walrus song - take a listen below!

Have you heard our new significant word?

Students have been learning various significant words throughout our school year. Our new word is unique. Significant words give students a meaningful context for letter learning.

For students new to letters it allows them to be exposed to each letter multiple times and in various contexts.  Each letter is highlighted on its own each day as we sing poems, practice writing, and explore words that begin with each letter.

For students familiar with letters and their sounds, it allows them to embark on their next step of putting letters together to form words and sentences. Students often use these words for writing books, notes and pictures during centre exploration time.

How can you support letter learning at home?

Review our significant words throughout the year. What letters are within them? What sounds do the letters make? Look around your house and try to find other items that also have those letters. Try exploring letters in various ways including writing, drawing, making them out of Lego or play dough and of course, singing the alphabet!

Phys Ed. Update from Ms. Hennick:

ROS Students are currently participating in a ‘Circus’ unit in PE class. We are learning a variety of new tricks using various equipment such as juggling sticks, scarves, hula hoops, spinning plates, diablos, tossing rings and juggling clubs. Students are encouraged to check out the Youtube channel, the National Circus Project. Below is a list of videos that students can watch to inspire them to try new tricks while in the gym. We are very excited about this unit! Thanks for your support!
