Orange Shirt Day - Monday, September 30th
On Monday, September 30th Royal Oak School will be acknowledging Orange Shirt Day.
Orange Shirt Day is as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. It developed out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at a Residential School, and presents an opportunity for all staff and students to discuss her story.
To learn more about Phyllis’ story, please visit the Orange Shirt Day website athttp://www.orangeshirtday.org/phyllis-story.html
We want to ensure that every child matters as we celebrate Orange Shirt Day. We are encouraging students and staff to wear an orange shirt on September 30th.

This Past Week:
This week we continued to explore our mathematical thinking by sorting different objects by their size, shape and colour. What can you sort at home by their size, shape and colour? Hint: You can practice sorting by shape and size by unloading the dishwasher at home!
Continuing to look at the world through the lens of science, we ventured outside this week to gather evidence of seasonal change. Students were asked to consider what changes they noticed in the natural environment that tells them Fall has arrived. Based on the evidence gathered, students generated a number of questions they would like to learn more about, such as "Why do seasons change?" "Why do trees lose their leaves?" and "Why do leaves change colour?". We look forward to investigating these topics further in the weeks to come.
"I sorted my bears by size: big, medium and small." |
"I can sort by colour. I'm making lots of groups."
"It was hard to sort the purple than the brown, because it had way more pieces."
"We can sort with the rainbow. Where can we put the brown?"
"Can you tell I sorted by shape?"

Scholastic Book Orders
September 24th, 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Your child brought home their
first Scholastic Reading Club flyer this week.
Scholastic Canada is a program that allows
students and teachers to order level appropriate books at affordable
prices. Every time we order we have the
opportunity to earn free books and learning materials for our classroom. New flyers will come home each month and the
flyer will be date stamped with the order due date. This due date will also be posted on our
weekly blog.
Your child will most likely be excited about the new
flyer each month and will want to share with you when they see books that they
have read at school. Please take some
time to look through the September flyers.
To place an order simply go online at https://canadaclubs.scholastic.ca/ to create a parent account and follow the
steps to find your teacher. Ordering and paying online is the easiest way of
placing your book order.
If you have any further questions about
Scholastic, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school.
Happy Reading,
Ms. Dixon, Ms. Sirup, Ms. Sticksl

Terry Fox Run
September 20, 2019
On Friday,
September 27th, Royal Oak School and William D. Pratt School will be
participating in the Terry Fox Run.
Students will gather on the field between the two schools to take part
in the annual 30-minute run, which is scheduled to begin at 11:00am. Students attending afternoon Kindergarten are
welcome to attend, if they are accompanied by a supervising adult.
On this day please
ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather (including
running shoes). If the weather is poor,
students will walk inside the school during their PE class time. We are
encouraging students to wear Royal Blue to show their school spirit!
We are asking that
each child donate a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry Fox Foundation during the
week of September 23rd-27th.
All
parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child/children in this
event are more than welcome.
We do require a
fair number of volunteers for this event to ensure its success. If you have security clearance and if you are
able to volunteer during the run time, kindly contact our school Volunteer
Coordinator at rosvolunteers@gmail.com.
Thank you for your
continued support.
